Protect Your Skin By Using Moisturizers With The Right Ingredients

It’s summertime which means you are probably spending a lot more time out in the sun. At Artliss, we believe that some sun exposure is good - bring on the vitamin D! - and our choice is to wear a hat, lightweight clothing and taking advantage of shade or using an umbrella to block harmful rays. We suggest saving the heavy duty sunscreens for extended time in the sun. You may agree with us on this and don't like to apply sunscreen every time you step out of your front door....but you would feel more comfortable knowing that your daily skin care routine naturally provided some sun protection for your skin and lips. That’s where we at Artliss® come in. While we don’t carry a sunscreen in our online store (see below for reasons why), we absolutely do carry products that can help to keep your skin healthy and moisturized and provide a bit of natural sun protection at the same time! Let’s uncover some of the ways our body butters and lip butters can work for you during the summer months. (PLEASE READ DISCLAIMER BELOW)

Let’s talk carrier oils…

The main way our body butters and lip butters are able to provide some sun protection for your skin is because of the properties of the ingredients they contain. Carrier oils such as red raspberry seed oil, coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, etc... and butters like shea, shorea and mango have ranges of naturally occurring sun protection. Not only are these ingredients good for moisturizing your skin but they also do not pose any threats to your body like known endocrine disruptors and penetration enhancers found in many commercial sunscreens.

Our most popular summer products

All of our body butters and lip butters provide some level of natural sun protection, but for the summer months we highly recommend our Coconut Lime Body Butter. Made with shea and mango butters, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, vitamin E and more, you can be sure your skin won’t be fending for itself when outdoors. We also love this scent for summer because it reminds us of being in a tropical paradise, and who doesn’t like that?!

Our Coconut Aloe Lip Butter is also extremely popular during this time of the year. With a light coconut scent and made with organic, cold-pressed, extra virgin coconut oil, shorea butter, sweet almond oil, aloe extract, beeswax and vitamin E, this is the perfect lip butter to protect and moisturize your lips during the summer months.

Why is zinc oxide tricky to work with?

At Artliss, we not only take into account how we can best assist your skin, but we also are very focused on making our products safe and enjoyable for you to use. Companies that make all natural sun protection lotions and lip balms will often include zinc oxide in their formulation because it is truly the best natural barrier to UVA and UVB rays. Zinc oxide is tricky to work with, however, because the zinc oxide in a formulation that may look smooth to the naked eye could actually be binding to itself when seen under the microscope and leaving pockets of unprotected skin. These companies that offer natural sunscreen and can claim an SPF factor have usually gone the next step to laboratory test their products to make sure that the SPF claim is accurate and that the zinc oxide is behaving properly. Beware of buying "sunscreens" at your local market stall! We at Artliss are not quite at the stage of laboratory testing our products, so we decided not to play around with zinc oxide to attempt a sunscreen and thereby make claims that we cannot back up.

What is our own practice?

Hi, my name is Darlene, and I am the owner and product developer of Artliss Naturals. Here is my summer routine in a nutshell - every morning I wash and moisturize my face with a mineral sunscreen (in the winter I use our Nourishing Face Butter), apply a layer of Coconut Aloe Lip Butter followed by a layer of one of our Mineral Lip Tints, and moisturize with one of our luxurious Body Butters.....that's it! No one in our family uses sunscreen on a regular basis, but if we will be spending extended, unprotected time in the sun, we prefer brands like Alba Botanica and Badger.
